 About Me: History and Experience

 I discovered my passion for horticulture and landscaping at a young age after my parents gave me a small plot of land to manage and that passion has  grown over the years .

While studying I had weekend jobs that fueled my passion and after completing my VCE  I took an apprenticeship with the city of Melbourne parks and gardens. I was apprentice of the year at Swinburne first and second year and in my third year I was nominated for the Brens scholarship for third year apprentice of the year for the state of Victoria.
Working with the City of Melbourne meant I was in a different park every six months and I gained a tremendous amount of experience with:
  • general maintenance;
  • annual bed preparation and care;
  • pattern planting like the floral clock;
  • turf, cricket wickets and oval maintenance;
  • creating indoor and outdoor annual displays  Conservatory and Bourke street mall;
  • managing specialist gardens  - Royal Botanic gardens and Government House;
  • Nursery management -  Fitzroy nursery conservatory.
After completing my apprenticeship I worked at the city of Melbourne's Wandin advanced tree and shrub nursery for several years.  I managed the 65 acre nursery, living on site, tending to the 40 000 plants.  My job here also included providing advice to councils and private buyers on selecting suitable plants and  trees for their needs.

In 1993 I returned to college for a further 3 years at night to gain my Advanced Certificate in horticulture. And in  1996 I established Silverleaf Landscaping, where my aim was to use my knowledge, experience and creativity  to develop a strong and reputable business.

From start to finish I work closely with clients to establish their dream gardens. Past projects have included: a Swiss forest, a Japanese garden, and a formal English garden. I also do restoration work to restore the gardens to their former glory, including rebuilding after damage done by other work.

My work with water features, outdoor kitchen areas, paving, walls  and other stone work, I believe, serves to highlight the breadth of knowledge, experience and the skill that I bring to each job. However it is my love of plants and my selection of plants that blend in with or highlight various landscapes that, I feel, sets me apart from the hard landscapers.
